Tech Info for Graduating StudentsBelow are instructions on what to do and how to do it regarding retaining the information currently on your MSB Novell account and GroupWise e-mail after you graduate and your account is closed. If you do not understand any of it please contact the Tech Center. The below information applies to students graduating with a Georgetown University diploma only. If you are leaving the university but will not be receiving a diploma (i.e. exchange students, etc.), please email msb-help@msb.edu for information about your accounts. In your email to msb-help@msb.edu, you must disclose information stating that you are not graduating from Georgetown. Technology Disorientation ClassesOffered in the Main Lab:
Account ExpirationAccess to your MSB Novell Account will terminate 30 days after graduation. After that no P: Drive, no S: Drive, no Lab Access, no Lexis Nexis, no Bloomberg. Access to your MSB Groupwise email will terminate 6 months after graduation. If your email archive is on a shared drive (i.e. your P drive) be sure to move it prior to losing your MSB Novell Account, otherwise you will lose the archive, even though you will continue to have access to MSB Groupwise for five additional months. Once you close your MSB Groupwise account or it expires, hoyasonline administers your @georgetown.edu "Email for life"; email address. While you can use your @georgetown.edu address for life, you have to set it up to forward to a non-Georgetown email account somewhere. You can update your forwarding by going to the Alumni Association's hoyasonline website and clicking 'Set up e-mail forwarding' on the right side of the page . As soon as you change the routing, messages sent to your @georgetown will no longer appear in your GroupWise account. Keep this in mind in determining when you update your routing. Click here for information regarding forwarding all current MSB account e-mail to a non-Georgetown account. Archived EmailIf you have been archiving your GroupWise email, you will need a copy of the GroupWise client to read it, even after graduation. If you are not planning on keeping the client on your personal computer, you must unarchive all emails and print them out or forward them to another account. If your email archive is on a network drive (i.e. your P drive) be sure to move it prior to losing your MSB Novell Account, otherwise you will lose the archive. Preserving Important EmailThere are several options available for retaining messages after you graduate, but continuing to use GroupWise in online mode is not one of them. Please be aware that you will need to change the way that you access email after your account is terminated! There are several methods of preserving the email. One is to simply forward all of the messages that you want to keep to another email account. You can do this without downloading or installing any extra software; you will just need to set up a GroupWise Rule to do this efficiently. Another method, one that is recommended if you have a lot of messages, is to remove GroupWise and install another Email client, such as Mozilla Thunderbird. The directions for configuring Thunderbird to check GroupWise email can be found here. After you have configured Thunderbird, you should be able to click and drag messages from the server onto your hard drive in a folder structure that you have created. P: Drive, S: Drive, W: DriveYour P: Drive, W: Drive and S: Drive will be erased when your MSB Novell account is closed 30 days after graduation. You may copy the contents of any network drives to CD using the CD Burner(s) in the lab for free. We have blank CDs for sale in the Main lab for $1. Six computers in the MBA lab have a CD burner and all of the computers in the Main lab have CD burners. Alternatively, we will burn your P drive to CD for you for $5. We want the $5 in advance so you have to drop by the Main Lab and fill out a form. If you choose for us to make the CD, we will mail it with your data or you can pick it up in the lab. Deconfiguring your ComputerAfter you graduate and your MSB accounts are closed you have the option to remove the MSB configuration from your computer. If you want to get the MSB Network programs removed, either read our Deconfiguration Guide (located at the bottom of the page) or drop by the Tech Center during walk-in hours. We will remove whatever you like. The above information applies to students graduating with a Georgetown University diploma only. If you are leaving the university but will not be receiving a diploma (i.e. exchange students, etc.), please email msb-help@msb.edu for information about your accounts. In your email to msb-help@msb.edu, you must disclose information stating that you are not graduating from Georgetown. TutorialsDeconfiguration VideosNetID and UIS password are required to access these links: Deconfiguration GuideFrequently Asked QuestionsCan I still use Groupwise even though I am off campus or abroad? Yes. Groupwise is designed so that if your computer is connected to the internet, it can access the mail servers at Georgetown and retreive your mail. Where ever you are, if you are able to surf the web from your computer, you may use Groupwise to check your email. Why is the Novell Client so important to me gaining access? The Novell Client is a software that distributes certain ablities and rights when you log into it using your username and password. This program communicates with many other servers and software to give you access to your various drives and the ablity to use MSB Network Applications. It is the backbone of the MSB Configuration. Removing the MSB Network Configuration from your systemNOTE: If you feel uncomfortable removing these programs yourself, feel free to utilize the MSB Tech Center's help hours to remove your Configuration. In order to use the guides to remove the MSB Network Configuration, check your computer's C:\ drive to see if a folder named "MSBConfig" exists. If it has been removed, tampered with, deleted, renamed or relocated, please bring you computer to Tech help hours to remove your configuration. To remove GroupWise, use the standard Add/Remove Program tool in your Windows Control Panel (Start >> Settings >> Control Panel). Prior to removing GroupWise, make sure you have taken steps to save your archived e-mail in a format other than GroupWise Archive. Select one of the other MSB Programs you would like to remove from the Add/Remove program tool. Click the "Add/Remove" button to begin uninstallation of the selected program. If you remove Norton Anti-Virus, we strongly encourage you to install another advanced anti-virus program. Once you have done the above, erase the "MSBConfig" folder on your C: Drive (if present). |
