GroupWise Email TopicsThere are several ways for MSB users to get their GroupWise e-mail. In the past, we have recommended that users exclusively use the GroupWise client. However, this is by no means the only way to connect to the servers. There are many options for connecting to the GroupWise servers; however, some methods will allow more functionality than others. Native Groupwise ClientsGroupWise Client The GroupWise client offers full compatibility with all GroupWise features. It is the method of choice for faculty and staff members. Students will be able to use this in the lab and have the option of installing this on their computers. However, the GroupWise client does not automatically download messages onto your hard drive - everything is managed on the server. To view your messages, you must have both an active Internet connection and an active account, unless you configure GroupWise to do otherwise. For all documentation regarding the new GroupWise client please proceed to the following website: GroupWise Documentation You can download the full GroupWise Client here. GroupWise Web Client - WebAccess WebAccess: https://msb032.msb.edu/gw/webacc or https://msb031.msb.edu/gw/webacc The GroupWise WebAccess client is almost as fully functional as the main client. While it is lacking in some features, it has access to features like Proxy accounts, the GroupWise calendar, the GroupWise address book, shared folders, and shared address books that some alternative clients are lacking. It can also be accessed by any computer with an Internet connection. The drawbacks to the WebAccess client are that the interface is limited and that you will not be able to download messages to the hard drive. Groupwise Alternatives (IMAP Connection Clients)NOTE: Please consult the Tutorials section at the bottom of the page to configure your selected client. The following clients are ones that are configured via IMAP support. IMAP clients generally have some missing functionality compared to the native interfaces, but they also are capable of downloading the messages to your hard drive and allowing you to view the previously downloaded emails without an internet connection. Mozilla Thunderbird Mozilla Thunderbird is an open-source, free email client that is similar in nature to the Mozilla Firefox web browser. It is fairly easy to use, and can be configured to check multiple email accounts if desired. You can also download messages to your hard drive for storage, and you will be able to view your folder architecture and build it on the server. So far, MSBTC tests have shown that Thunderbird has no noticeable affect on GroupWise or Outlook and vice versa, so one can install Thunderbird and use it regardless of other email clients installed on the computer. Because of the way that Thunderbird interacts with the servers and the way it was designed, Thunderbird users will not be able to view their calendars using it (as there is no calendar in Thunderbird). Users will also not be able to use Proxy accounts or view shared folders with it, and you will not be able to view the GroupWise directory with it. You may download the Mozilla Thunderbird client by going to their homepage Microsoft Outlook Microsoft Outlook is one of the most commonly used email clients today, and it is possible to connect to our servers using it. Users may configure it to work as an IMAP client to send and receive messages, as well as create and edit their folder lists. By configuring Outlook to connect via IMAP, you also avoid the problem of having GroupWise take control of the connection sequence, and you are able to store messages on your hard drive. Using Outlook as an IMAP client does come with some limitations. Like Thunderbird, you will not be able to access proxy accounts, shared folders, shared address books, or your calendar. Another potential drawback of using Outlook is that in the past, there has been conflict between Outlook and the GroupWise client. It is recommended that you install one or the other to ensure Outlook works properly until further testing is done. Microsoft Outlook is provided as part of the Microsoft Office suite. Other Alternatives (POP Connection Clients)NOTE:The following client is configured via POP protocol. POP supports even less functionality than IMAP clients. Gmail With the growing popularity of Gmail, you can now use this client to retrieve/download your Groupwise emails directly to your Gmail account. Please keep in mind, however, with this POP account, when you delete emails in Gmail, it does not delete them from your MSB GroupWise account. You must maintain the size of your GroupWise account in addition to your Gmail acoount. Please follow the tutorial below to set up this connection. You may configure wireless devices such as PDAs and email-enabled cellular phones to connect to the MSB GroupWise servers. Because this encompasses a wide variety of devices, there will not be individual steps listed here. However, we will post some general guidelines. If your device allows for you to configure an email account as IMAP, use the following information (NOTE: your device may not ask for all of this information): Email address: NetID@georgetown.edu If your device does not allow for an IMAP connection but allows a POP3 connection, use the following information (NOTE: your device may not ask for all of this information): Email address: NetID@georgetown.edu If you are asked to authenticate to the Outgoing Email server, you will need your NetID as your username and your NetID password as the password. This only applies if you must enter information for the Outgoing Email Server. Again, these are just guidelines that you may use to attempt to configure the email on your device yourself. If you experience difficulty, please contact us at the MSB Tech Center for further assistance. |
