Externships
The Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance GEMA and the Career Education Center collaborate each year to offer the GEMA Externship Program, a unique opportunity over Spring Break for undergraduate seniors as well as Georgetown MBA and Law students. The externship pairs students up with experienced professionals in entertainment and media to get a firsthand look at day-to-day operations in the industry. Specifically, students attend a number of individual or group meetings (ie, “informational interviews”) with professionals representing a broad spectrum of experiences within the industry. Please visit GEMA for more information.

Catherine's NYC Externship
As someone who ran track in college, performed three non-paid sports internships and worked for over seven years directly for a sports team, I thought I knew everything there was to know about the world of entertainment and media. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to participate in GEMA’s externship program in New York City over my Spring Break my first year of business school because it opened my eyes both to how little I knew and to the enormous possibilities that existed for business and entertainment to intersect.I met with industry executives who included the Senior Vice President at the Weinstein Company, the President of Velocity Sports & Entertainment, the Director of Business Development for MTV/Spike TV and the COO of Major League Soccer. I met with the President of the Dow Jones Ventures, an executive at American Express Publishing, the Vice President of Marketing for Nickelodeon and the Senior Vice President of Marketing for WWE. The width and breadth of talent that these and other Georgetown alumni possessed was tremendous, and they were all very generous with their time.
I hope to continue building my relationships with everyone whom I met as I look to my full-time career opportunities upon graduation in May. By participating in this externship, my eyes were opened to a whole world out there aside from finance, marketing and consulting…and even sports alone. The entertainment industry at large includes sports, film, TV, publishing, media and more…and there are opportunities for MBAs to build successful careers! I encourage anyone interested in exploring these fields to apply for the GEMA externship. Good luck!
Margaret's LA Externship
After spending two years in the entertainment industry with Sony Pictures Entertainment, and living in Los Angeles for six years, I wanted to explore career options within the entertainment industry. Fortunately I had the opportunity to participate in the Los Angeles GEMA Externship program last March, 2007 and it was an unbelievable experience! We started the week off by meeting with Rich Battista, CEO of GEMSTAR/TV Guide, International and founder of the GEMA organization. The meeting with Rich was very informative and very personal - setting the tone for the entire week. All GEMA alumni who participated were extremely generous with their time – we met with upper level executives at Paramount, Fox, Bunim-Murry Productions (“Real World”), ABC and Disney - just to name a few.
The program was invaluable and facilitated some wonderful networking opportunities. I look forward to keeping in touch with everyone that I met as I progress in my career within the world of entertainment. I would definitely recommend applying for anyone interested in a career in the entertainment industry! Best of luck!
