No. There is no minimum GMAT score at which an applicant is automatically rejected nor an upper range at which an applicant is automatically accepted.  The average GMAT score for the Class of 2010 is 678.  You must submit an official copy of a GMAT taken within the past 5 years

Is an English competency examination such as TOEFL or IELTS required?

Yes. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of all non-U.S. applicants unless they have obtained a FOUR-YEAR academic degree (bachelor's degree) or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction.

For admission in the academic year 2009-2010, candidates must provide a score less than two years old.  For example, results submitted by First Round applicants should be from tests taken on or after November 7, 2006.  Similarly, Second Round applicants should submit results from tests taken on or after January 16, 2007.  Final Round applicants should submit results from tests taken on or after April 3, 2007.

Is there a minimum score for the TOEFL or IELTS?

Yes. The minimum required TOEFL score is 600 for the written test, 250 for the computer-based test, and 100 for the Internet-based test.  For the IELTS, we require a minimum score of 7.5 out of 10 on the academic module.  We accept only academic module results.

Are interviews required?

Yes, interviews are required for admission to the MBA program.  Interviews are evaluative and are included as a part of the application process. Georgetown MBA does not conduct informational interviews. We schedule and conduct on-campus candidate-initiated interviews in the fall only.  Off-campus interviews are by invitation only, after a preliminary review of your submitted resume and GMAT score.   After mid-December, interviews are conducted at the invitation of the admissions committee only.  If you are selected for an interview, you will be notified via e-mail within 4-6 weeks of submitting your completed application.

Proof of identity is required at check-in for your interview. Please bring identification to avoid cancellation.

Visit our recruiting calendar to see when we will be interviewing near you.

Is work experience required for admission?

We recommend that candidates for admission have a minimum of two to three years post-graduate work experience.  Ninety-eight percent of the students enrolled had prior work experience.  Our students average five years of work experience.

What preparatory coursework is recommended?

While not a prerequisite, candidates should have had quantitative coursework equivalent to college level calculus.  The Admissions Committee does like to see that applicants have successfully completed one or two quantitative courses (such as statistics or calculus).  If you did not complete such a course as an undergraduate, you may wish to enroll in a community college course prior to submitting your application for admission.  Students often recommend that if you have not taken any accounting, an overview course is helpful.

May I take courses in other departments in the university?

Yes. MBA students may take elective courses outside the School of Business, with the approval of the department. For example, MBA students often take courses in the School of Foreign Service, the Government Department, and the Public Policy Program. Also, consortium schools in the Washington, D.C., area have available courses to accommodate specific interests. Naturally, courses should be related to the student's goals in the Program and must be at the graduate level.

Does Georgetown waive or remove requirements based upon prior study?

Waivers may be granted for the following core courses: Financial Accounting I and II, Management Accounting, Finance I and II, and Quantitative Methods I and II. However, there is a rigorous process for waiving a course.

Does Georgetown consider transfer credit?

No. Because the Georgetown MBA is more than a collection of courses, we are unable to accept transfer credit. The integrative experiences and core courses are an integral part of the MBA experience.

Are there any joint degree programs and how may I apply?

Yes. The MBA Program offers joint degrees with the School of Foreign Service (MBA/MSFS), the Law Center (JD/MBA), the Graduate Public Policy Program (MBA/MPP), the Medical School (MD/MBA), and a five-year undergrad/grad program with the School of Foreign Service (BSFS/MBA). Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit. Everyone who is offered admission to the Program is considered for a scholarship award. No additional application materials are necessary. EARLY APPLICATION is very important.

May I take classes at the MBA Program without being enrolled in the degree program?

No. Only degree candidates and those enrolled in other graduate programs at Georgetown or at a consortium school may take MBA classes.

Is it possible to complete the Georgetown MBA two-year program early?

Early graduation is not possible because required components of the program occur through the final semester.  In the second year, the Global integrative takes place immediately after Mod 3 and the Leadership & Business Ethics II course in Mod 4.  Students must complete both in order to graduate and neither can be taken earlier because they conflict with other program requirements - LBE I & II are each only offered in the Spring and cannot be taken at the same time and Global takes place the same week as second residency.

What is the cost of the MBA program?

The tuition for the 2008-2009 academic year is $39,984. Additional living costs are likely to add $20,000 or more to this. You should also estimate an additional $2,500 per semester for books and materials.  An estimated budget is provided for incoming students through the financial aid department. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit. Everyone who is offered admission to the Program is considered for a scholarship award. No additional application materials are necessary. EARLY APPLICATION is very important.

What kinds of financial aid and scholarships does Georgetown offer?

Financial aid is awarded on the basis of need and is available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. It comprises the loan programs sponsored by the federal government and private loan sources (i.e. MBA Loans, ACCESS Loans, etc.). Financial aid materials are sent to all accepted students. The FAFSA is required and is available at colleges, universities, and libraries in your local area. International students may qualify for some of the private loan programs as long as they have a US co-signer or verifiable assets.

Do you have a research assistantship program?

Yes. MBA students serve as research and teaching assistants within the School of Business. These opportunities are posted at the beginning of the academic year and stipends range from $1,100 to $3,300 per semester.  All candidates are eligible, but no applications are available until student orientation.

What are the costs and financial aid for the joint degree programs?

  • JD/MBA students pay tuition at Law Center rates, and all financial aid is handled by the Law Center. Financial aid is awarded only on the basis of financial need for JD/MBA students.
  • MD/MBA students pay tuition at Medical School rates, and all financial aid is handled by the Medical School.
  • MBA/MSFS, MBA/MPP students pay tuition at MBA rates, and all financial aid is handled through the Main Campus Financial Aid Office.
