The program incorporates two personal leadership action plan courses which, along with interactive coaching sessions, focus on identifying competencies for effective leadership, assessing your leadership strengths, and creating your personal action plan.
There are four critical-thinking and problem-solving skills courses, which focus on normative and behavioral influences that can shape an individual's decision to engage in moral action and how that decision is enacted. Two courses are designed to help students develop more fully their critical thinking skills, with a particular normative focus on the role of values in decision-making and action. The other two courses focus on social and psychological influences on judgment and creative problem solving, processes which can shape whether and how individuals engage in moral action.
Negotiation and influence skills are emphasized through seven courses. The role of power and politics in leadership is studied with a particular emphasis on situations involving "influence without authority". Three of the courses focus on negotiation skills, which are central to meeting these leadership challenges: managing conflict and reaching agreement among people who have different agendas. The other four courses target the political aspects of leadership: character and style, managing the politics of relationships, language of leadership, agenda selling, and persuasion techniques.
Seven courses stress organizational and institution-building skills as central to leadership. Specifically, these courses focus on strategic management, crisis management, human resource management, coalitions and alliances, trust and community-building, leading change, and creating a culture of integrity.
On selected Saturdays, guest speakers from business, government, and nongovernmental organizations will speak about leadership challenges they have faced.
